To help you make the right call a little more easier, below we are going to give a list of different types of closures. And we categorize these closures into dispensing and non-dispensing closures.

Types of Packaging Closures

In general, dispensing closures work great for products that are typically used in measured amounts, while non-dispensing closures work better for beverages or more viscous liquids. Now Let’s see what each type of closure is best for.

Category I: Dispensing Closures

disc top caps

Disc Top Cap

The disc top cap is an injected molded dispensing closure and it will reveal an orifice when pressure is added to the top of the bottle cap. This type of cap is usually applied to cosmetic containers.

Fine Mist Sprayer

Fine Mist Sprayer

This tyle of dispensing closure can produce splash-free fine mist. Fine mist sprayers are great bottle closures for beauty products with spray applications, for example perfumes, essential oils, hair care products, and spray suntan products.

Glass dropper

Glass Dropper

Glass dropper comes with a plastic bulb and a glass pipette that can extend into a container. And when someone squeeze the plastic bulb, the product will be drawn into the pipette and dispensed as you want.

This type of closure is often paired with Boston Round bottles and vials for essential oils, fragrances, and cosmetics.

Orifice Reducer Cap

Orifice Reducer Cap

This closure can help control the flow of your liquid product, bringing practicality and reliability to your containers. Orifice reducers are ideal for dispensing inks, dyes, food colorings, hot sauces and other liquids.

Pump Dispensing Cap

Pump Dispensing Cap

The pump closure is ideal for liquid products because it allows liquid to be evenly dispensed with each stroke. These dispensing pumps are often paired with plastic bottles, jars, jugs, F-style containers and so on.

Reike Pail Lid

Reike Pail Lid

The reike pail lid has a spout for dispensing product. This closure type is ideal for liquid and viscous products.

Sifter Fitment Cap

Sifter Fitment

A sifter fitment cap is usually a plastic or metal disc that snaps over the bead or rim of a container.

Since it can dispense the right amount of product, it is ideal for dispensing spices, herbs, and seasioning products when shaken.

Snap Cap

Snap Top Cap

This type of dispensing cap has an “orifice” with a hinged lid to prevent leakage. It is the ideal closur for food applications like honey, syrups, sauces, condiments and so on.

Besides, it also works well for health and beauty applications: essential oils, lotions, shampoos, bath soaps, gels, body washes, etc.

Trigger Sprayer

Trigger Sprayer

Trigger sprayers are dispensing closures that are usually made from polypropylene (PP) plastic.

The nozzle of the sprayer can be adjusted to create a fine spray, jet stream, or mist for dispensing liquids; therefore it is usually used for general use such as water, cleaning solutions or chemical use.

Twist Top Cap

Twist Top Cap

This dispensing closure will reveal an orifice when the top is twisted. These bottle caps are widely applied on glue containers, and is ideal for dispensing viscous products such as lotions and condiments.

Category II: Non-Dispensing Closures

Continuous Thread Cap

Continuous Thread Cap

A continuous thread cap is a metal or plastic closure and may have different liner options. It features threads that wrap continuously around a given finish.

These continuous thread caps are often paired with containers for peanut butter and mayonnaise.

Lug Cap

Lug Cap

Lug caps are also called Twist Off (T/O) caps that are compatible with containers whose threads are non-continuous.

Dome Cap

Dome Cap

This style of closure comes with a rounded top surface. It features a sleek appearance and are often used in conjunction with Round Bottom Jars.

Pail Lid

Pail Lid

Unlike the reiko pail lid with a spout for dispensing, pail lid is a HDPE closure that has a sealing gasket.

Phenolic Polycone Cap

Phenolic Polycone Cap

Phenolic caps feature a LDPE cone (Polycone) that seals the inside diameter of a given container. It is ideal for essential oils, chemicals, and even other aggressive products.

Ribbed Closure

Ribbed Closure

The ribbed closure has vertical grooves around the outside edge so end users can remove the closure more easily. This ribbing style is often seen on plastic caps, for example, lotion pumps and snap-top caps.

Smooth Closure

Smooth Closure

This is the opposite of a “Ribbed Closure”, a smooth closure has no grooves around the outside edge. These closures can be lotion pumps, snap top caps, flip top caps and standard, non-dispensing plastic caps.
